Hand-printed Fleur-De-Lis Napkins

This is a quick and fun project that can be done for pretty much any occasion, like a child’s birthday party, a baby shower, or a themed dinner party. Flour sack dish towels usually come in packs of 3 or 4 and measure about 32” x 38”, so each towel can yield two large or four small napkins. We used a potato to make our fleur-de-lis stamp, but you could also cut a sponge into the desired shape.
You’ll need:
Flour sack dish towels
1 potato
Fabric paint in any color
Pinking shears
Fleur-de-lis pattern sized to fit the potato surface
1. Cut the dish towels into the desired size using the pinking shears, then set aside.
2. To make the potato stamp, cut the potato in half, then cut out the fleur-de-lis pattern: place the pattern on top of the cut side of one half of the potato, then use a paring knife to carve out the pattern.
3. Pat the surface of the potato dry, then brush the fabric paint onto the stamp (we brushed the surface of the stamp first with black paint, then added a little blue paint over that, to create a dimensional effect) and place down onto the corner of the napkin (or wherever you choose to place the image).
4. Press down lightly so that the paint adheres to the fabric, then pull straight up. You can touch up the edges of the pattern with a small paintbrush if you wish. Allow to dry completely.
